There are three fabric variants for the VELOSOCK Bike Cover on car carriers – standard, water-repellent and water-resistant.
The standard fabric is the lightest of the three and offers sufficient protection when transporting the bike in mostly dry conditions or when stored indoors. The fabric has rip-stop properties and reasonable breathability, which also means that fine dust can still penetrate the fabric. However, it is very quick-drying, so if you are still caught in the rain on the way, the cover will dry in no time.
Water-repellent fabric is much more durable and, as the name suggests, is water-repellent, which means that it is able to resist some water penetration, but it is not completely waterproof. Instead of protecting your bike from heavy rain, the main function of this fabric is to protect your bike from sand, small stones, road salt and dirt that stick to your bike when you transport it on a carrier, but fine dust can still get through. fabric. In addition, the breathable fabric allows the cover to dry quickly in case of rain and creates less wind resistance during transport.
The waterproof fabric is the most durable and densest material (5 mm) of the three available options. It will protect your bike from any moisture and is equipped with water-repellent zippers. In addition, the extra durable high-quality fabric provides excellent abrasion resistance.
All three fabrics are designed to last with minimal maintenance (machine washable).

Compared to a bike cover, a bike rack cover wraps around the entire bike, from the tires to the handlebars, providing full protection for your bike during transport and storage.
In addition to using VELOSOCK to store and transport bikes, you can use both types of covers when you take your bike into your hotel room (or other public places). If you and your bike travel a lot, you may have noticed that most hotels don't allow you to take your bike into the room because it can leave stains and scratches. The good news is that hotel staff usually don't mind you taking your bike with you, as long as it's covered and therefore harmless to the interior.
To explain the difference between our bike covers and car racks, read these brief characteristics.
VELOSOCK bike covers for car racks are designed to fit specific bike models:
Road bikes - specially adapted for cyclocross, track and touring bikes;
MTB – made for performance, hybrid and flat bikes;
and triathlon bikes.
The main difference between the three is the cut of the covers around the grips - they are made to fit drop (road bikes), flat (MTB) or aero (triathlon) handlebars. In addition, the car carrier covers are suitable for bicycles with a tire width of up to 29 inches and with a total length (from the outer part of the front wheel to the outer part of the rear wheel) of up to 1.95 m (for MTB with a tire size of 27-28') or up to 2, 05 m (for MTB with tire size 29'), up to 1.90 m (for road bikes) and up to 2.05 m (for triathlon bikes). Be extra careful when choosing the right size for your MTB as there are two sizes available!
Correct measurement of the entire length of the bicycle: please measure the entire circumference of the length of the bicycle at the level of the outermost points of the front and rear wheels (do not use the manufacturer's measurements, as they do not include the width of both tires).
Once you've found the graphic design you like best, it's time to choose the appropriate bike type and material (standard, water-repellent or waterproof fabric). When choosing a waterproof fabric for a bicycle cover for a car carrier, please note that it is a made-to-order product.
So the most important part would be to measure the entire length of your bike as per the given instructions and see if it matches the dimensions given above.
Also note that if your bike has racks or fenders over the rear or front wheel, this can be a hindrance to ensuring a perfect fit.

Some bike racks come with a warning about the maximum speed that should not be exceeded. Aerodynamic drag increases with speed and going over a gear could exert too much force on the fairing of the bike. If possible, use a lower speed (-20 km/h) than is allowed for your bike rack (see bike rack instructions). If your car carrier bike cover is made of waterproof fabric, remember that the maximum speed allowed is 90 km/h/56 mph and the wind speed does not exceed 15 km/h/9 mph. The speed of the vehicle must always be adapted to the transported load and the current driving conditions, such as the type of road, road quality, wind conditions, traffic intensity and valid speed limits. The breathable and water-repellent fabric of the car carrier bike covers (in addition to the waterproof fabric) allows quick drying in case of rain and creates less wind resistance during transport. These are all important aspects to consider when transporting a bicycle.
For aerodynamic reasons, we recommend using the bicycle cover only on car carriers with a rear bicycle carrier.
Why?
When transporting a fully covered bike on a roof rack, crosswinds can hit the bike harder than usual because the cover creates more surface area for wind resistance. Therefore, even if your bike is securely fastened - and especially if it isn't - it's important to always assess safety and make sure you're not putting yourself, your bike or other road users at risk.
The cover for the car carrier VELOSOCK Bike Cover is compatible with most rear bike carriers thanks to several well-placed holes on the sides and in the bottom. The holes allow access to the bike's frame and tires, so you can attach it to the rack in a variety of ways. Also, make sure your bike doesn't exceed the height of your vehicle, as parts outside the turbulence zone can create drag.
